Nelly Roy- Artistic Approach 2025
For more than 30 years, I have been painting and drawing the human being in his search for authenticity with our interdependence as a common thread. In different aesthetic choices, the following series of paintings have thus emerged: The Chairs of Time, The Abyss, The Human Chain, Art-Nations and Refuge.
The Chairs of Time (1990) take on the surrealist appearance of characters in very colourful hues to become a pictorial X-ray of the unsuspected depths of being.
The Abyss (2001), inspired by the tragic events of September 2001 in New York, is the result of my questioning centered on the human predisposition to live in harmony. In a minimalist pictorial representation where the cotton cheese in the background symbolizes the bandage, they represent transcendent beings who emerge together from the seabed towards the light.
The Human Chain (2001) takes on the appearance of human heads with mesmerizing eyes linked to each other by enveloping arms to symbolize the interconnectedness of humans and their interaction with their environment. The shades and texture of the paint giving the heads the appearance of stone makes this subject timeless.
Art-Nations (2010 – Grant from the Fonds des Laurentides and the CALQ) was born following a visit to the Yukon where the realization of the existing harmony between Indigenous people and immigrants from several countries led me to the need to highlight the beauty of cultural diversity and to build bridges between communities.
It took shape under the creation for more than a year and a half of 4 large family frescoes inspired by a cultural exchange with 4 families of refugees and immigrants from Saint-Jérôme from Bhutan, Congo, Chile and the Philippines. A very colourful surrealism as a painting technique offers an accessible and inspiring tool for questioning.
Refuge (2015) arose in me following the proportions that the migrant crisis took at that time. Whether you are my neighbor or you come from the other side of the world, you are entitled to my support. On the canvas, an intertwining of characters in a nihilistic setting, united by comforting hands, concentrates the reflection on the theme "The human being is the only refuge of the human, he draws his strength from the other".
I will therefore have devoted my work and my reflection on human relations for more than 30 years.
To me, seeing one human being helping another is a dazzling Human Landscape.
